CHINA’S Ministry of Industry and Information Technology revealed that the countries non-ferrous metals industry has to improve energy efficiency by 18 percent by 2015.
The Shanghai Daily reports that the ministry reckons that if this industry sector can hit this target then the country could save energy the equivalent to 7.5 million tons of standard coal.
The ministry also requires this sector slash emissions of sulphur dioxide by 10 percent. This emission directly contributes to acid rain, harming forests and crops.
In the sector so far energy use per unit of industrial output fell by 19.6 percent during the five years ending in 2010. In 2011 the sector used energy equivalent to 151.38 million tons of standard coal, representing 4.4 percent of the countries energy consumption - so gains here produce major energy savings.
As part of the process the Chinese government will start to phase out outdated aluminum smelting and copper, lead and zinc refining units. |
